On 24 February 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered an invasion of Ukraine by Russian armed forces previously concentrated along the border. The invasion included broad attacks across the Belarus-Ukraine border and was followed by targeted airstrikes throughout Ukraine.
The ongoing conflict has seen an enormous refugee crisis. Over 5 million refugees have since left Ukraine, while an estimated 7.1 million people have been internally displaced. Approximately one-quarter of the population had left their homes in Ukraine by 20 March. 90% of Ukrainian refugees are women and children, and according to UNICEF, by 24 March 2022, more than half of all children in Ukraine (7.5 million) had been forced to leave their homes.
I travelled to Ukraine and Eastern Europe in March/April of 2022 to document and tell the stories of the many Ukrainian people impacted by this ongoing war. Here are some of these stories.
